Ingonish Wastewater Treatment and Collection System Project
For more than 35 years, the need for improved wastewater infrastructure in Ingonish has been a topic of discussion. In 2023, Victoria County Council identified water and wastewater in Ingonish as a strategic priority and in 2024, approved a wastewater treatment system project in the Capital Budget. This project aims to enable community growth while delivering key environmental and economic benefits, including increased housing opportunities.

Ingonish Wastewater Treatment and Collection System Project has finished this stageIn March 2024, the County received $7.3 million in funding from the Province of Nova Scotia through the Municipal Capital Growth Program, specifically for this project.

Public Consultation
Ingonish Wastewater Treatment and Collection System Project has finished this stageIn Spring 2024 a survey was sent to residents. The results from this survey were shared with Council. Based on the number of positive responses from residential and commercial property owners, Council decided to move forward with the plan to serve as many interested properties as possible, within the approved budget.
In March 2025 a Community Information Session was held to inform and update the community about progress made to date.
In Spring 2025 a survey was mailed to property owners to help determine the final route of the Wastewater Collection and Treatment System. The route to be designed would be based on the positive responses received.

Design, Permitting and Construction
Ingonish Wastewater Treatment and Collection System Project is currently at this stagePhase 1
The first phase of the project consists of the construction of a wastewater treatment plant and collection system servicing the south side of South Ingonish Harbour. This phase of the project is currently in the final design and permitting stage. A tender for phase one has been issued and construction is scheduled to begin in September 2025.Phase 2
The second phase of the project will continue north around the harbour to the Parks Canada boundary and consists of an additional wastewater treatment plant and collection system for residential and commercial properties. This is in the design stage and construction is not expected to begin until 2026. -
Collection System Expansion
this is an upcoming stage for Ingonish Wastewater Treatment and Collection System ProjectOnce the system is operation and as the community grows and more properties seek to connect, the collection system can expand. Expansion of the system will depend on additional funding and council approval.
